Phoenix Rises to Fire Up Creative Enterprise
A pioneering initiative led by Science City
York and funded by Yorkshire Forward is being launched to
kick start the development and growth of a new generation of
creative and digital businesses for the region.
The Science City York Phoenix Centre, independently housed
within York St John University’s main campus in the centre
of York, opens its doors in April 2009 to provide affordable
space for new creative and IT-based ventures, with access to
specialist technical facilities and sector-specific business
support, mentoring and training.
Applications are now being sought from individuals, new
creative and digital businesses, or established ventures
seeking to develop in a different direction.

The new facility has been developed by Science City York in
direct response to feedback from members of its Creative
York and IT & Digital York networks, fulfilling an
identified requirement for a centrally located, incubation
facility to support the region’s growing creative and
digital sectors.
Ideal candidates for the Phoenix Centre are those who have a
great idea, yet lack the experience and required resource to
fully exploit the business potential of their concept or

Offer? The Phoenix Centre offers a
prime city centre location for businesses, combining office
space with state-of-the-art amenities and an efficient,
customer-focussed support infrastructure.
In addition to offering standard office
facilities, reception, domestic, portering/mail and security
services, the Phoenix Centre provides direct access to
sector-specific, specialist facilities such as editing
suites and workshops for prototype development.
Business can occupy space in the Centre for a
maximum of one year, the first six months of which are
offered at minimal cost, with a further six months
significantly subsidised. Benefits

and partner organisations, including training and funding

Science City York’s Sector Specialist and Delivery Team will
act as mentors for the young businesses over their crucial
first year of operation, providing specialist support and
actively championing the companies.
